🇮🇩 JALA: 🦐 Shrimp-ing With Technology, Empowering The Underserved Smallholder Farmers!
When I visited JALA in Yogyakarta, Indonesia!
Indonesia is one of the largest shrimp exporters in the world, yet many smallholder shrimp farmers are living under extreme poverty.
WHY? Unpredictable and low yield.
On average, Indonesia’s shrimp farm yield is 0.6 tons per hectare per year VS 20-30 tons industry average in other countries.
JALA leverages technology (IoT and big data) to provide end-to-end shrimp farming solutions to farmers.
With JALA, farmers now understand about their farm quality, i.e. disease risk, water quality, etc. This helps to improve farm efficiency and eventually farm yield.
Founded by a team of engineers and aquaculture veterans, the startup has impacted over 18,500 farmers with 33,000 ponds and traded over 7,500 metric tons of shrimps. JALA also hosts free educational workshops and provide lab services for the smallholder shrimp farmers.
