🇲🇾 Buzz (formerly Beebag): Solving Plastic Waste with Discounts from your Favourite Stores!
According to WWF Malaysia in 2020, Malaysia generates about 1M+ tonnes of post-consumer plastic waste annually. If not worse, 80% of Malaysians still don’t use reusable bags and rely on plastic bags.
Finding this to be a painful problem, brothers Joel Lim and Joshua Lim started Buzz (Formerly Beebag), a retail technology startup that encourages people to use reusable bags via gamification and incentives.
What I find different and exciting about this initiative compared to others with the same “reduce single-use plastic” objective is the financial incentives involved!
Users can scan their receipts from selected partner shops into the Beebag app and receive shop discounts, giftcards, and better cashback rates… and even just reusing their Beebag Smart Bag can also get people these benefits!
The sad truth is that many people are just too used with single-use plastic and they don’t care enough about the environmental harm to change their habit.
That’s why bringing in financial incentives for people is a smart and savvy move, oftentimes the last missing puzzle piece in so many similar types of initiatives!
